Simply choosing right kind of replacement windows in Tacoma, WA you want for your home isn’t all that matters. You will also need to make sure that your new windows are installed the right way, though all that matters is that you install your new replacement windows in the method that works best for you and your home.

There are a number of different ways replacement windows can be installed, each providing different advantages and disadvantages. The two most common types of replacement window installation are pocket and full frame installations.

Pocket replacement window installations consist of leaving the old frame in place and installing the new window in the old frame. The old window’s sashes, parting stops, jamb liners, and storm windows are taken out, which leaves only the old window frame in place. The new window is custom fit to go inside the old frame. Pocket window replacements are ideal for windows with more narrow frames. Pocket installations offer a few main advantages, including that they are easy, relatively fast, and less expensive than other installation methods. They also allow the new windows to be installed without disturbing the existing window trim.

However, pocket installations do not allow for easy inspection, and often leave a rough opening that paves the way for potential water damage, insect infestations, rot, poor insulation, and mold. Also, pocket installations can leave homeowners with less glass viewing area which can reduce the window’s available light, viewing area, and overall appearance. Not to mention that old trim often does not match the new windows.

Full frame replacement window installations begin by removing the old window completely, all the way down to the studs, to make room for a complete brand-new window and frame. Full frame installations allow homeowners to inspect and treat the rough opening for mold, water damage, insects and rot. They can also boost glass viewing area, natural light levels, and overall appearance and style, as well as add some extra décor and personality with a new interior window trim. However, it’s important to keep in mind that full frame installations can be much more expensive than other methods as they involve a lot more time, energy and work.

Both pocket and full frame replacement window installations can be good choices depending on your home, your budget, and your preferences. For example, a historic home with special interior trim would greatly benefit from a pocket installation, but a home with water damage or leaky windows requires a full frame installation.
