A window replacement on your Federal Way, WA home isn’t the biggest home improvement project you can do, but it does require some preparation. There are 4 big steps you need to take to prep your home for new windows, keep the workers safe, and protect your belongings:

  1. Schedule Conveniently: Think about you and your family’s daily routine and how you use the parts of your home that will be taken out of commission during replacement vinyl windows installation. Try to schedule the replacement when it will least disrupt your routine, especially since it’s potentially dangerous to have children or pets around the construction.
  2. Allow For Full Access – The window contractors will need full access to the rooms and outdoor areas that have the windows that are being replaced. They will be carrying out old windows, bringing in new windows and working with large tools so they need plenty of space. Get rid of anything that could block their way, and turn off any security systems that could go off during the work. Clear paths both in and outside, this will make the work go faster.
  3. Clear and Cover Up: As with any home improvement project, there will be some debris, dust and dirt. Its important to remove any furniture, valuables, or decoration items from the area surrounding the new windows. If you can’t move something, be it a big couch or a built in, be sure to cover it up with a sheet or drop cloth. It’s also important to remove all window dressings and security sensors as they will get in the way of the work and potentially be damaged. If you’re doing your windows replacement around a holiday, don’t forget to take down any wreaths or other outdoor decorations.
  4. Get Messy– While windows replacements might not make as big of a mess as other home improvement projects, you should expect some! Taking out old windows and installing replacement vinyl windows means lots of scraping, gluing, sanding, drywall patching and even painting, so you’re sure to see wet paint and dry paint as well as dust on the floors, windows, surrounding furniture and even outside.

On average, a window replacement only takes 1 or 2 days, but there are a few variables that might change that timeline including climate, weather, number of windows, type of windows and other variables. Be sure to talk with your contractor about how long he or she thinks it will take to get your replacement vinyl windows up and running.

Getting your home ready for replacement windows isn’t too hard. All it takes is a little planning and some minimal preparation and you’ll have new windows in no time at all.
