Do you live in an apartment or condo without any yard space and you’ve always wanted to start your own garden? You can utilize the space right outside your window! It’s simple and a great way to teach kids how to grow their own foods.
All you need:
- Large bucket
- Window box
- Water
- Potting soil
- Seasonal vegetable seeds
- Liquid organic fertilizer
- Ruler
Before you plant the seeds, you’ll want to fill the large bucket half way with potting soil. You will then pour water into the soil and kneed it with your hands until it’s good and moist. Many potting soils are hard and difficult to work with. Pre-soaking the soil will eliminate any problems with its texture.
You will then dump the soil into your window box and even it out with your hands. You’ll want to add in just enough soil so that there is about ¼ inch below the rim of the box.
When planting the seeds, you’ll first want to decide how many rows you want. You’ll then use your fingers to make a trench ¼ inch deep and spaced apart according to the seed package directions. Then cover the seeds with ¼ potting soil, pat the soil down with your hands to secure them.
Continue to water your seeds on a daily basis so that the soil is moist but not soggy. In no time you will have a beautifully sprouted garden right outside your window!
